產品上標示SPF代表的是什麼意思？
美國系統的防曬係數SPF﹙Sun Protection Factor﹚：防曬效果為SPF×10﹙分鐘﹚。表明防曬用品所能發揮的防曬效能的高低。它是根據皮膚的最低紅斑劑量來確定的。
防曬係數的真相
在理想的狀態下，SPF15的防曬品就應該可以阻隔93.3%=14/15[遮蔽率(%)=(SPF-1)/SPFx100%] 的紫外線，SPF30的防曬品就應該可以阻隔96.6%=29/30的紫外線。
但須要注意的是，一般人在塗抹防曬品的時候通常未達2mg/cm2的標準量，致使產品未能達到預期的效果。
如果膚色偏白、易曬傷、易長斑的人就需更高防曬係數的產品。若須從事長時間戶外活動或水上活動時，不但需要使用高防曬係數的產品，甚至需要防水(Waterproof)或抗水(Water-resistant)的防曬商品才夠。
皮膚容易過敏的人，應儘量選用物理性防曬品或標示通過低敏感度測試(Hypoallergenic)防曬產品。
紫外線依波長不同，按照區分為三個波段：
UV-A (400-320 nm)，UV-B (320-290 nm)，以及UV-C (290-100 nm)。
曝曬在強烈的紫外線下，ＵＶ－Ｂ會引起肌膚紅腫，也就是肌膚發炎、腫脹，相當於輕度燙傷的情形。而ＵＶ－Ａ則會讓肌膚因色素沈澱而變黑。以前UVC經過臭氧層時已被吸收，因此不會到達地球表面，較不會侵害人體肌膚。但由於臭氧層日漸被破壞且稀薄，使得UVC對人體的威脅日益增高。人體可能接受到的UV-C多為人工光源如電焊或紫外線殺菌燈等。
